Free Artist Event Ahead of New Canadian Play

The Sault Community Theatre Centre (SCTC) is inviting local artists, creatives, and community members to a free evening of connection and conversation with working theatre professionals.

On May 11 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, SCTC will host a free community meet and greet with Pat the
Dog Theatre Creation, featuring Artistic Director Lisa O’Connell. The event offers an opportunity for those involved in the arts, or looking to get involved, to learn how creative work is developed and sustained in communities outside major urban centres.

With decades of experience supporting new work across Canada, O’Connell brings insight into how artists can build meaningful projects and careers in regional communities. While rooted in theatre, the conversation is open to creators across disciplines and aims to foster connections within Sault Ste. Marie’s growing arts scene. The event is free to attend, and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be provided.

This visit coincides with SCTC’s presentation of Calling the Rock Home, a new Canadian play
by Sudbury-based playwright Karen Thistle, running May 12 and 14 at 7:30 PM.
Part of the newly launched Playsmelter Tours network, the production is touring Northern
Ontario with stops in Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, and Timmins. The play explores the “Eastern
Exodus” of the 1960s, when many Atlantic Canadians left home in search of work, following
three young Newfoundlanders navigating that choice.

“This is a rare opportunity for our community, not only to experience a new Canadian play by a Northern Ontario writer, but also to connect with people who are actively building creative work across the region,” said Garrett Abrams, Theatre Manager / Artistic Director of SCTC. “We want anyone who is making art, or hoping to, to see that this kind of work can happen here, and that they can be part of it.”

Following each performance, audiences can take part in a talkback with the cast and creative team. SCTC’s partnership with Pat the Dog Theatre Creation reflects its ongoing commitment to strengthening the arts ecosystem in Sault Ste. Marie, creating opportunities for both audiences and artists to engage with new Canadian work.
