M.D. Dunn has released nine albums since 1993. Every record attempts a change in musical ideas, be it musically or lyrically. One constant is the raw honesty at the forefront. Dunn is an artist interested in expressing core values in a straight forward way, with music that is subtle in its sophistication.
Of the 2018 release, “The River Lately,” M.D. Dunn writes, “I hope you like it. The album and the songs mean a great deal to me. I don’t like to saddle my music with “meaning,” and especially not what I think it “means,” but this one has been a powerful experience. The songs, apart from one redo and one older song, were written between March 2016 and August 2017, recorded at Reveal Music in Sault Ste. Marie, between September 2017 and January 2018. Overall, the album deals with mental illness, survival, healing, and the realization that love is the engine of the universe.”
“There’s an echo of Bruce Cockburn in Dunn’s guitar work…The instrumentals are engaging guitar journeys that explore sound and acoustic space. By themselves they would be a compelling reason to acquire this album, but that’s only scratching the surface…The combination of strong lyrics and compelling guitar work make this album shine…This one’s a keeper.” ~Gene Wilburn, Penguin Eggs Magazine, Autumn 2017
“Across The Tracks” features two episodes of M.D. Dunn’s work.
Mark D. Dunn (vol. 1) goes to ‘The River Lately’ to ponder love and the universe questions, an album out in early 2018 with the monster Innocent Weapon Ensemble band.
Mark D. Dunn (vol. 2) selects some of his personal favourites from his rich catalog, and host AV offers his choices, for the nuggets that are behind the music.
