Through collaboration with students at Algoma University, Sault College and partner organizations, this grant provides opportunities Sault Ste. Marie community members to thank front line workers and share their COVID experiences through Art and Storytelling, culminating in community event. These public art initiatives aid in the beautification and provide heightened safety to public spaces. The addition of information to our local history archive will provide opportunities to contribute to the capture of our local cultural landscape and provide recognition opportunities for individuals in the community of their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. This project will bring attention to the continued creativity and resilience of community members in this region and to build upon an existing foundation of considerable activity with four following undertakings:
1) Light Box Art Displays: 6 light displays which will commemorate and provide visual representation through the eyes of artist portraying experiences through the pandemic.
2) Oral Histories: 5 recordings featuring individuals working in healthcare and the front lines share their experiences during the pandemic. In addition, 6 podcasts will be created which pull together groups of individuals to discuss and reflect on their experiences.
3) Traffic Box Art Wraps: 6 new art wraps will be designed and installed in the downtown area of our city celebrating front line workers and positive messaging.
4) Downtown Celebratory Event: The conclusion and implementation of the above activities will culminate with a celebration to recognize the achievements of our community during the pandemic and unveil above projects.
This project is funded by the Government of Canada.
