Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder – The Superior View Lisa Tucker
PMDD, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, is a cyclical, hormone-based mood disorder. It is triggered by ovulation and occurs during the luteal phase (the final two weeks before a period starts). Unlike typical PMS, PMDD causes debilitating emotional and physical symptoms that heavily disrupt daily life, work, and relationships. The symptoms usually fade shortly after menstrual bleeding begins.
PMDD is a disorder that impacts millions of people worldwide, making it roughly as common as conditions like type 2 diabetes, though it is frequently under-diagnosed or mislabelled as general depression or severe PMS. The ladies invite Shawna to speak about her experience with this little known condition.
“It only took a dozen or so in-patient hospitalizations, close to 50 ECT treatments, 6 ketamine treatments, hundreds of hours talking to psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers. I’ve been to Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Midland, Petoskey and endless trips to Kinross…. and this is part of my diagnosis, PMDD with ADHD. I share this with you because before my recent diagnosis I had never heard of PMDD. I just thought I had really bad PMS, with treatment resistant depression and anxiety.”
