The Doc Talks Soo Greyhounds w. guest MARK MATIER theBorderline
Mark Matier, a native of St. Catharines, Ont., was drafted by the Soo Greyhounds in 1990. The stellar defenseman went on to have a special career in junior hockey, skating on the powerhouse Greyhound teams that went to three consecutive Memorial Cup tournaments, in ’91, ’92 and in 1993, where the Hounds finally won the championship, right in Sault Ste. Marie.
“When I was drafted, I didn’t know much about Sault Ste. Marie,” said Matier, who now serves as a colour commentator, working alongside longtime play-by-play man Gino Cavallo, on the Hounds Shaw Cable broadcasts. “I had no idea where it was. Looking back, it was the best thing that could have happened for me.”
Mark has long made the Sault his home and is now a Grade 7 teacher at Korah Intermediate School. Along with his wife, Stacey, the Matiers have two sons, Tanner and Jack, himself a defenseman who recently signed an NHL deal with the Nashville Predators.
Months prior to The Borderline Entertainment Network going on air with its radio stream & podcast+ station in February of 2020, we had met with Dr. George Shunock to discuss the creation of a podcast series in which he would co-host. The Doc agreed to the concept and we went to work recording. We were able to record three episodes before the advent of the Covid pandemic.
The show was called The Doc Talks Soo Greyhounds.
Dr. George Shunock is well known in Sault Ste. Marie, ON as the man who saved the Greyhounds. He continues to serve as Alternate Governor/Director for the Soo Greyhounds Hockey Club.
