Fred McKey makes guitars for a hobby. This luthier is a garage rocker and father to two professional musicians, Dean and Kyle. He shares the knowledge he has gathered over the years.

McKey worked for Algoma, a major steel company, for 32 years as a general machinist, volunteered as a fire and first responder for 20 years, and has played garage rock all of his life. Making guitars is a hobby he took to later in life, building one for himself as a means of saving money. Though he has only made a handful of musical instruments in his time, his son Kyle, an accomplished player and a member of a couple of groups, uses a McKey built electric guitar, and he loves it.

“Remember that happiness is a way of travel, not a destination.”
