BONNIE and CLYDE by MICHAEL WAITE
A few years ago Jared Nelson Smith, my musical friend (since before we could drive ourselves to a show) sent me a recording without any vocals on it. It sounded like it came from somewhere between the Mississippi and the Northern Sahara, and he said he thought it would be fun to write a love song from the perspective of the notorious Clyde Barrow, “Don’t worry Bonnie, I’ll always be your Clyde.” It took me a little while to study those characters and find something lovable about them. I learned that they were desperate, and committed to each other and a life outside of the law. Clyde told his sister Nell, “I’m just going on ’til they get me. Then I’m out like Lottie’s eye.” So I summoned my desperate romantic outlaw feelings and sang about it. My singing partner Kerry Yost added her voice to the chorus, which is more of a howl than a melody.
Directed, filmed and edited by Erica Waite. Baux Truckey and Seamus Waite as Bonnie and Clyde. Modern dance by Kristina Hay, Jamie Robinson and Theo Armstrong. Lyrics and lead vocals by Michael Waite. Backing vocals by Kerry Yost. All other music by Jared Nelson Smith.
