Local guitar player, Joel Poluck, left the Soo in 1990 to pursue a career in music, moving to Los Angeles, CA, then New York City where he teamed up with an old Mississippi bluesman named Floyd Lee. Playing almost daily in the streets and local train stations including Times Square and Grand Central they began recording their own music with Joel producing and releasing their CDs on his Amogla Records label. With the success of their first release “Mean Blues” (2001), they began to get invitations to perform worldwide, from juke joints in Mississippi cotton fields to the biggest blues festivals in Europe. During their twelve year career together they recorded several blues chart topping albums and were the subjects of the award winning documentary “Full Moon Lightnin’” with band members including legendary Mississippi blues drummer Sam Carr (Sonny Boy Williamson/Eric Clapton). Their songs have been covered by many artists including California blues rocker Walter Trout (John Mayall/Canned Heat) and appear on the Mississippi Blues Trail historical marker in Merigold, Mississippi.
Floyd Lee passed away in 2020 at the age of eighty-six. As a tribute to Floyd and their friendship and the work they had done together Joel has now published his book, “Songs For Floyd – Blues Poems and Other Things.”
“Floyd had tears in his eyes after singing “Last Night” by Little Walter. He asked me where I had learned to play guitar like a black man. In his voice I could hear a thousand songs.”
