Turn up the Heat! Concerts in the newly-heated AlgomaTrad Main Hall!

Algoma – AlgomaTrad is excited to announce its VERY FIRST Winter/Spring Concert Series , featuring 4 acts of some of Canada’s finest traditional and folk musicians including: Old-Time fiddle and banjo masters Porch Couch on January 09;  Polky, a multi-talented female group fearlessly blending traditional Polish music with sounds and rhythms from across the globe, on February 27;  Northern Ontario songwriter Campbell Woods, April 11; and two-time Canadian Folk Music Award-winner and Juno-nominated Abigail Lapell releasing her new CD on May 08. AlgomaTrad is pleased to present this series in the AlgomaTrad Main Hall for the first time ever due to near completion of renovations and initiation of the new heating system, funded by our own supporters, the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Government of Canada Canadian Heritage, FedNor and the Northern Ontario Heritage Foundation.

Concerts occur at the AlgomaTrad Centre, 1249 F&G Line on St. Joseph Island. Tickets and more information can be found at algomatrad.ca.

Series ticket prices for all four concerts are (plus HST): $110 General Admission, $95 Seniors, $85 Students, and $60 Children 6-12, and Children 5 & under free. In addition, with intention of making our events accessible to everyone, we are adding a “sliding scale” ticket option for each concert. Tickets for the entire series of 4 concerts are now on sale online!

Porch Couch, Friday, January 09, 7:30pm – Alan Mackie and Jaron Freeman-Fox are Porch Couch, reanimating old-time and square dance tunes on the fiddle and banjo, channeling a deep respect for the tradition through their adventurous, comical and psychedelic spirit. Porch Couch is pure blissful fun, funneled into fiddle and banjo arrangements that are absolute explosions of sound and colour, set against the hushed backdrop of home: a beige couch on a concrete porch in the West Toronto sun.

Polky, Friday, February 27, 7:30pm – Polky, led by multi-talented female musicians, delights audiences with joyful vocal harmonies, unusual instruments, and upbeat performances. Drawing deep inspiration from Poland’s rich cultural tapestry, they push musical boundaries by fearlessly blending traditional Polish music with sounds and rhythms from across the globe, carving out a niche entirely their own. Lead vocalist, Ewelina Ferenc earned the prestigious title of Traditional Singer of the Year at the 2022 Canadian Folk Music Awards.

Campbell Woods, Saturday, April 11, 7:30pm – Campbell Woods is a singer-songwriter from Smith’s Falls, Ontario. As an emerging artist, Campbell has performed at Festival of Small Halls, Blue Skies Music Festival, Vancouver Island Live from the Rock, and Ness Creek music festivals, as well as the Ottawa and Halifax Urban Folk Festival. He has shared the stage with Kathleen Edwards and Lynn Miles. Writing songs rooted in the tradition of Townes Van Zandt, his style is tried and true. They are his stories and his songs, but an evening with Campbell Woods is an invitation to be reminded of your stories, our stories, and how they all echo around the room when truth is told.

Abigail Lapell, Saturday, May 08, 7:30pm – Abigail Lapell, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, is releasing her new recording “More Songs About Love”, the extended companion to her JUNO-nominated 2024 album “Anniversary”. Combining cynical and sentimental elements, the collection ultimately emerges as an earnest celebration of love. The past six years and four spellbinding releases, Lapell has garnered four Canadian Folk Music Awards and accrued a staggering 60 million streams across online platforms. She tours regularly across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Lucky for us, her CD release date is exactly on May 8^th, and we get to celebrate with her!

Algoma – AlgomaTrad est ravi d’annoncer sa toute première série de concerts hiver/printemps, mettant en vedette quatre groupes de musiciens traditionnels et folk parmi les plus talentueux du Canada, dont les maîtres du violon et du banjo Old-Time, Porch Couch, le 9 janvier; un groupe féminin aux multiples talents qui fusionne avec audace la musique traditionnelle polonaise avec des sonorités et des rythmes du monde entier, Polky, le 27 février; l’auteur-compositeur du Nord de l’Ontario, Campbell Woods, le 11 avril; et Abigail Lapell, lauréate à deux reprises des Prix de musique folk canadienne et nominée aux prix Juno, qui lancera son nouvel album le 8 mai. AlgomaTrad est heureux de présenter cette série dans la salle principale d’AlgomaTrad pour la toute première fois, grâce à la fin des rénovations et à la mise en service du nouveau système de chauffage, financés par nos propres partisans, la Fondation Trillium de l’Ontario, Patrimoine canadien du gouvernement du Canada, FedNor, et la Fondation du patrimoine du Nord de l’Ontario.

Porch Couch, vendredi 9 janvier, 19h30 – Alan Mackie et Jaron Freeman-Fox, alias Porch Couch, réinventent les airs traditionnels de danse carrée au violon et au banjo, insufflant un profond respect à la tradition grâce à leur esprit aventureux, humoristique et psychédélique. Porch Couch, c’est un pur moment de bonheur, porté par des arrangements pour violon et banjo qui sont de véritables explosions de sons et de couleurs, dans le cadre feutré d’un canapé beige sur une véranda en béton, sous le soleil de l’ouest de Toronto.

Polky, vendredi 27 février, 19h30 – Polky, groupe de musiciennes aux multiples talents, enchante le public avec ses harmonies vocales joyeuses, ses instruments insolites et ses performances dynamiques. Puisant leur inspiration dans la richesse du patrimoine culturel polonais, elles repoussent les frontières musicales en mêlant avec audace la musique traditionnelle polonaise à des sonorités et des rythmes du monde entier, créant ainsi un style unique. La chanteuse principale, Ewelina Ferenc, a reçu le prestigieux titre de Chanteuse traditionnelle de l’année aux Prix de musique folk canadienne 2022.

Campbell Woods, samedi 11 avril, 19h30 – Campbell Woods est un auteur-compositeur-interprète originaire de Smith’s Falls, en Ontario. Artiste émergent, il s’est produit au Festival of Small Halls, au Blue Skies Music Festival, à Vancouver Island Live from the Rock et au festival de musique de Ness Creek, ainsi qu’aux festivals de folk urbain d’Ottawa et d’Halifax. Il a partagé la scène avec Kathleen Edwards et Lynn Miles. Ses chansons, ancrées dans la tradition de Townes Van Zandt, offrent un style éprouvé et authentique. Ce sont ses histoires, ses chansons, mais une soirée avec Campbell Woods est une invitation à se remémorer nos histoires, nos histoires à tous, et comment elles résonnent dans la salle lorsque la vérité est dite.

Abigail Lapell, samedi 8 mai, 19h30 – Abigail Lapell, auteure-compositrice et multi-instrumentiste torontoise, lance son nouvel album « More Songs About Love », une version étendue de son album « Anniversary », nominé aux prix JUNO en 2024. Mêlant cynisme et sentimentalisme, ce recueil se révèle être une sincère célébration de l’amour. Au cours des six dernières années et de la sortie de quatre albums captivants, Lapell a remporté quatre prix de musique folk canadienne et cumulé l’impressionnant total de 60 millions d’écoutes en ligne. Elle se produit régulièrement en tournée au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Europe. Ce concert tombe exactement sur la date de la sortie de son nouvel album…ça va être une soirée spéciale.
