Episode 2: PANNING FOR SLABS w. BEN BARRUS & GARETT SVIR

The term panfish has been used to refer to a wide range of edible freshwater and saltwater fish species that are small enough to cook whole in one frying pan. Tasty eating, in other words.

Our guides and podcast hosts ring up two pals that are experts on panfishing, guiding and other trade secrets.

Ben Barrus works at Ballard’s Resort, situated on Lake of the Woods, at the northernmost point of Minnesota and shared by Ontario and Manitoba, with more than 300,000 acres of Minnesota waters. The 70-mile-long Rainy River flows east to west from Rainy Lake to Lake of the Woods. Ballard’s Resort is located where these two great waters meet.
As a third-generation family operation, since 1961, they’ve grown with the hospitality business and are very proud of their reputation as a leader in the tourism industry.

For Garett Svir, growing up a mile from one of the most prolific steelhead runs on the North Shore of Lake Superior had it benefits and allowed him to perfect his craft from an early age. According to Garett he is still perfecting his craft, and that in fishing, you never stop learning. That is why his greatest passion is teaching others how to become successful anglers. He does this through guiding, seminars, freelance writing and online forums.
