OCTET is an exhibition of artists working and teaching in the Visual Art Program of Algoma
University. The eight artists all have individual creative practices and offer diverse points of view
and forms of artistic expression but are bound by their passion for art education.

Michael Burtch
Michael Burtch is a sculptor, multi-media and sound artist. He is the retired Director/Curator of
the Art Gallery of Algoma and is currently a part-time faculty member of Algoma University’s
Visual Art Program.

William Hollingshead
William is a graduate of OCADU with a Bachelor Degree in Sculpture and Installation Art. He
has a Graduate Certificate from the Ontario Museum Association and has worked in museums
for more than twelve years. He has been the Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Sault
Ste. Marie Museum for over five years and has recently joined the Faculty of Algoma
University’s Visual Art Program as part-time faculty, working with an amazing team of creatives.
Will Hollingshead works with storytelling, curation, mixed media and installation art.

Katie Huckson
Katie Huckson is an interdisciplinary artist based in Bawating/Sault Ste. Marie. She has a BFA
from Algoma University and an MFA from the University of Windsor and is currently working
towards her PhD in Communication, New Media and Cultural Studies at McMaster University.

Taylor Jolin
Taylor Jolin is an Ojibwe visual artist, photographer and graphic designer from Bawaating, (Sault
Ste.Marie) ON. She is a contributor to the forthcoming publication “Surveillance Logic in
Contemporary Art : Visions of Territory, Carcerality and Resistance”. Jolin holds a BFA from
Algoma University where she also serves as the studio technician for the Visual Art Program.

Annie King
Annie King is a nature-informed multi-media artist. Through sensorial material exploration, her
work evokes elemental and immersive aspects of nature, exploring ideas of loss and
environmental awareness and the eternal struggle between resilience and fragility. She has a
BFA from Algoma University and an MFA from the University of Alberta and is a part-time faculty
member with the Algoma University Visual Art Program.

Lucia Laford
Lucia Laford (Waawaaskone Kwe) is an award winning Anishinaabe and Irish artist and
Educator born in Baawaating, On. She is a proud two-spirit Ojibwe Kwe and a member of
M’Chigeeng First Nation. Lucia paints in a Woodland style that has been passed down from her
father. She is a passionate Indigenous Art Educator and loves working with everyone from youth
to the elderly and especially enjoys working with First Nation communities.

Amin Nadi
Amin Nadi is an integrated media artist, writer and researcher. He is a transdisciplinary
contributor at the New Centre for Research and Practice and a part-time faculty member in
Algoma University’s Visual Art Program

Andrea Pinheiro
Andrea Pinheiro has exhibited across Canada and internationally at Polygon Gallery, the Art
Gallery of Ontario, the Art Gallery of Vancouver, the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Novosibirsk
Graphic Triennial, Kyoto Museum of Art and Or Gallery, Berlin among others. She has
completed residencies at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Montello Foundation, Nevada and SIM
Residency in Reykjavik, Iceland. She is an Associate Professor at Algoma University.

About Algoma University’s Visual Art Program

Algoma University’s Visual Art Program offers a 4-year Bachelor of Fine Arts, a 3- year Bachelor
of Arts in Visual Art, combined degree options with other programs and a Minor in Visual Art.
Students learn in studios for painting, drawing, printmaking, digital media, photography,
woodworking and ceramics. The curriculum blends hands-on studio practice with Art History and
Theory, along with professional training through group exhibitions and professional practices
courses. Designed to prepare graduates for careers as artists, creative entrepreneurs and
community leaders, the program is housed in new, purpose-built studios at 1416 Wellington St.
